What Is Changing?
The Australian Government has announced that all providers delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) services will be required to be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. New SIL-specific Practice Standards will also apply, introducing stronger requirements around participant rights, safety, governance, workforce capability, incident management, and service quality.
These reforms have been developed following recommendations from the NDIS Review, the Disability Royal Commission, and extensive consultation across the disability sector. The objective is to ensure participants receiving higher-risk supports are protected by consistent national quality and safeguarding standards.
What Does This Mean for Participants?
For participants currently receiving SIL supports, the changes are designed to provide:
- Stronger safeguards and oversight.
- Greater accountability from providers.
- Improved consistency in service delivery.
- Enhanced worker screening and workforce requirements.
- Increased protection of participant rights and wellbeing.
- Greater confidence that providers meet nationally recognised standards.
Importantly, participants’ SIL funding and approved supports are not automatically affected by these registration changes. The focus is on ensuring providers meet the required standards to continue delivering SIL services.
